Joakim Jarl works as a Fire Protection Engineer at the Stockholm office.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a 38-year-old engineer from Skåne, currently living in Stockholm. I have a background as an engineering Officer in the Swedish Naval forces and about five years of experience as a Fire consultant in both large and small projects.
How did you end up at Citec?
A couple of colleagues from my old workplace started at Citec and I got curious. After some research, I found out that Citec was expanding its Civil unit including Fire Protection in Sweden and that got me interested. I also liked the international aspect and especially the Citec Europe – Citec India cooperation model that works very well.
So what does a Fire Protection Engineer do?
Our team works with fire protection optimisation, consequence calculations, fire simulations, design of smoke exhaust systems etc. I work mainly with Fire Protection documentation that specifies the requirements regarding fire protection and evacuation in buildings. I’m specialized in computer simulations of fires in enclosures and simulations of evacuation of buildings.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is the variety of projects. The international projects tend to be rather challenging due to regional regulations and standards, but that makes them all the more interesting. I also like the flexibility here, I can plan my day myself as long as my projects are running smoothly, which is a great advantage when having small kids. And of course, a great pleasure is to manage to solve the problems, and seeing the customer satisfied.
How do you spend your free time?
Most of my free time I’m spending with my family; my wife Linda and our kids Linnea, 9 months and Emil, 3 years. Recently we bought a house outside Stockholm, so I will probably spend a lot of time there renovating, as the house is from 1901. I also like to follow the major football leagues in Europe and I enjoy playing floorball with my friends.
